About this deal

When he was writing the novel, Brooks was given creative freedom for everything except the protagonist's physical traits. Mojang wanted readers to picture themselves in the novel, and were, according to Brooks, "very hands on when it came to inclusiveness". [1] Plot [ edit ] We need to be very clear: I’m not writing the Minecraft book. I’m writing a Minecraft book. If the folks from Halo called me to write the Halo book, I could do that, but you cannot write the Minecraft Book.

Idiot Ball: The protagonist makes apple trees go extinct... by burning all their oak tree saplings in a furnace because they thought they were worthless. Brooks' interest in the sandbox video game Minecraft began around 2012 when a friend introduced him to the game. In 2015, he was asked by Mojang to write a novel centered around the game. By the time his contract with Mojang had been completed, Brooks had finished a manuscript. [1] Martin, Tim (July 10, 2017). "The first Minecraft novel...or is it a self-help book?". 1843. Minecraft: The Island will tell the story of a new hero stranded in the world of Minecraft, who must survive the harsh, unfamiliar environment and unravel the secrets of the island. Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks, bestselling author of World War Z, is the first official Minecraft novel. Publisher's Description

Welcome

Green Aesop: Early on, the protagonist accidentally makes apple trees go extinct and doesn't realize it until later. This galvanizes them into leaving half of the island exactly as-is while they'd freely mine the other half. Laser-Guided Amnesia: The protagonist remembers their world, but nothing about specifically themself. Max Brooks: That was the whole point of this book. Book one was: you’ve got to learn how to live with yourself. Book two is: you’ve got to learn to live with someone else. That makes this book timely. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of kids are basically trapped on the islands of their homes, and they’re going to have to leave those islands pretty soon and reintegrate, and that’s going to take a lot of social skills that have maybe atrophied. You have these two characters who are king and queen of their kingdoms and then they come together, so it's about the compromise of their friendship. How do you tell someone what you’re thinking without upsetting them? And how do you listen to them? Friendship is very complicated, when you think about it. The top priority is finding food. The next is not becoming food. Because there are others out there on the island... like the horde of zombies that appear after night falls. Crafting a way out of this mess is a challenge like no other. Who could build a home while running from exploding creepers, armed skeletons, and an unstoppable tide of hot lava? Especially with no help except for a few makeshift tools and sage advice from an unlikely friend: a cow.

These animals will help you with your base by giving you food or company whenever they're not busy eating grass or sleeping (which is most of the time). Broken Aesop: The protagonist learning survival skills and lamenting their life spent on the computer becomes broken since Minecraft itself is a computer game.a b c Sheehan, Jason (July 22, 2017). Max Brooks: Yeah, and also, with everything I write I want to build trust with the reader. I want them to know that when they read one of my books, they can trust me to take them on a journey through a land that I know – that I’m their tour guide. But when they get together, we realize their two personalities work together well. Alex: As a book writer, you must be used to working alone. Did you draw on your own experience for The Mountain ?Max Brooks: Guy has to think and then talk through everything, and Summer is a do-er. She rushes in where angels fear to tread. I think a lot of that comes from the biome she spawned in. Guy had this island, this safe space where he had time to think and talk it out, whereas Summer spawned in the taiga, this frozen wasteland. This was the early version of the taiga, when there was almost no food, and she was freezing all the time, living on zombie flesh, and mobs came at night from every direction, so she had to fight for her life. I think it helped shape her, and so when confronted by a problem, Summer is more likely to jump in and then deal with the consequences, as opposed to Guy, who’d take a couple of days, maybe a week, to look at all the angles. Companion Cube: The protagonist uses a cow, and occasionally other mobs, for self-motivation, snark, and someone to talk to. Narrative Profanity Filter: Curses are sidestepped in the narrative, usually by saying they said a bad word but not saying which one. I talked with Max about how he found a great story in the clash of Guy and Summer’s personalities, and why that story is important in our pandemic-ridden times. But I had to first ask about what in the Overworld Guy is thinking when he decides to set out on his boat at the start of the book.
