It can’t be helped as your phone is the one doing the monitoring of your location and sending the alerts through to the Saphe One+. I like using Waze, but one thing that bothers me is the way it doesn't warn you about speed cameras unless you're already over the speed limit. I'd rather be warned anyway so that I can make sure I don't accidentally drift over the speed limit by the time I go through it. To be honest that's never actually happened to me, but I'd still like to be warned so I can make sure. It includes your typical fixed and mobile speed cameras, as well as average speed cameras. They could also warn you about those subtle cameras mounted on traffic lights, and so forth. This will be important, given that there are over 7,000 speed cameras that are strategically placed throughout most British roads. Yet, how does it actively warn you about it? Be Aware Of Your Surroundings The award-winning Saphe One+ Speed Camera Alarm, for example, starts up automatically with your car and allows you to tailor the traffic alerts to your exact needs. The system collects traffic data from over 8 million motorists in Europe, works throughout Europe itself, and will alert you about any accidents, hazards or dangers ahead that might hamper your journey. Alerts are actually delivered via your mobile smartphone, which uses its GPS to detect your location and speed while the Saphe One+ effectively acts as a Bluetooth speaker with added flashing lights for the app. This makes for very simple operation, and many drivers appreciate not having any additional touch screens to distract them from the road.I expected it would display speed limits if not all the time, when I exceed and/or when it alerts to speed cameras... it doesn't. Or at least not for the ghost mobile cameras I have entered to test. Well, once it’s paired to your phone, it’ll access your phone’s GPS to figure out where you are. Perhaps most importantly, it can also gauge where you’re heading to. From there, it can then aptly warn you if you’re about to drive into danger. Be it a traffic collision or a cheeky speeding camera hidden in the bushes. It is a neat little unit that springs to life when the associated Bluetooth phone with companion app is in proximity. This means just by carrying my phone it will alert as a dedicated unit, vs using Waze I have to ensure the audio is set up correctly for the alerts and have my phone on display. The Saphe Drive Mini sounded its alarm while its bright clear visual colour display symbol (of a speed camera) flashes up – reminding me of my speed and the distance to the next camera. What it can't do well at all however, as least in the UK, is mobile speed traps. It relies on other users pressing a button to record the location of a speed trap in much the same way that Waze relies on other Waze users to report them. The difference is that Waze has absolutely loads of users and Saphe seemingly has very few. So in reality Waze almost always knows about a mobile speed trap and Saphe almost never does. If only Saphe could tap in to Waze's data. Inattention is associated with 61% of all road traffic fatalities. Inattention in traffic is also connected to speeding. In fact, a report from the Danish Road Directorate shows that you are inattentive up to 30% of the time you sit in the driver's seat of a car. This applies to both you and me. Come on Saphe, please speed up both this critical update and the time it takes to update other areas of your database (eg. the M4 Slough area average speed road works were removed weeks ago and yet the database is still claiming it’s 50mph when it’s not. Pretty annoying after 20minutes of false alerts... Be mindful that some portable satnav devices have speed camera detection functions that should be disabled before use in countries that prohibit their use. What types of cameras do they detect? The likelihood is that you’ll be using your phone for Google Maps or music or simply using your cars in-built sat-nav, so your phone will just be sitting idle.
Where can I get one?
The Saphe Drive Mini does the same thing as the Saphe One+ but adds a small portrait colour LCD screen between the two reporting buttons. Mobile speed cameras will often use the same locations, week after week, as they are deemed safe and meet strict criteria for operating.
Like our previous Saphe One+ review, the Saphe Drive Mini adds a screen to help keep you safe while on the road. For those of you (like me) who have not heard of Saphe…they are a Danish technology company. Currently they are Europe’s best selling traffic alarm brand. Their aims are to reduce the number of road traffic accidents/incidents, speeding fines and points on our driving license by sharing real time traffic data. This can be done by other Saphe users notifying the system of any potential dangers on the road. Look for a clear display so you can read the information clearly without having to take your eyes off the road. Some will sound an alarm, too, which is a useful additional feature. Cruise control not only provides a more relaxing driving experience. It also helps you avoid speeding fines. If you do not use cruise control, you may, consciously or unconsciously, drive too fast. If you spot an accident, press the red button on the left, with a picture of a warning triangle. This lets others know that there could be a nasty pile-up or a lengthy jam waiting to happen. Thus, they’re now aware that they should probably reroute their journeys elsewhere.
What’s it like?
An informed driver is a safe driver. There are lots of ways that you can help to keep yourself informed and safe out on the roads (and keep others safe too). You can use the Saphe Link app to give you either on-screen alerts to upcoming cameras or show you a map of your location as you drive. I’ve never used either, as the whole point in the Drive Mini is to do without needing to use your phone – well, for me it is anyway. However, if you don’t want to pay for a costly speed camera detector, there’s a range of smartphone apps available that can offer the same peace of mind; they use GPS and online databases to flag up speed camera locations nearby. Are you also tired of speeding fines? Most of us have probably received a speeding fine at some point in our lives. A brief moment of inattention and flash – a speeding fine arrives in your mailbox. I have since switched to using CamSam PLUS (an Android app), which works flawlessly and costs very little. In fact I think Saphe bought their UK speed camera database from CamSam so you get the exact same speed cameras! Interestingly I still get warned about the same camera on the parallel road, but CamSam handles it correctly and doesn't crash. I'm finding CamSam (on the phone screen) plus Waze (on the car screen via Android Auto) to be a good combination. They don't conflict with each other and I get warned about all fixed cameras (through CamSam and optionally Waze) and mobile cameras (through Waze). The reason for not using Waze alone is that it only warns about cameras if you're actively speeding, so it's theoretically possible to accidentally speed up and go through one without having been warned.A low battery usage means no trailing wire just an infrequent charge, and that also helps it be ultra-portable for use across multiple vehicles.
