About this deal

I loved this book SO much. It's uniquely witty, beautifully observed, intricately woven - it made me laugh and weep and I truly never wanted it to end' MIRANDA HART Tanya has jumped on the BookTok trend and is reading It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover, although she’s not enjoying it as much as the popular author’s previous novel, It Ends With Us. Mimi has just finished what she’s calling one of the best books she’s read in a long time, All My Mothers by Joanna Glen, a novel about motherhood, grief, and love. Both Mimi and Linda are looking ahead to some of 2023’s big releases, in particular, Dust Child by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai. Her beautiful descriptions of characters and places are always effortless.

It's like the author looses steam the second our protagonist lands in Cordoba, which is an absolute let down after almost half the book knowing this will be the beginning of the Actual Quest. Eva’s story unfolds over the next thirty years in London and in Spain. Her parents separate and a tragedy in Bridget’s family sees Bridget and her family move to Israel. Eva feels this loss more keenly as, for a while, she lived with the Blume family and experienced their acceptance and love. All My Mothers paints an intimate picture of the complexities of family relationships and cultural identity. Eva has suspicions about her family and raises numerous questions and does some investigating throughout. This goes on for a number of years, along the way we meet some lovely characters and families and one or two not so lovely characters. It’s an immersive story, at times it’s joyful and happy but also at times it’s painful.Once again, most of the reading group very much enjoyed this book, and there were hardly any negative criticisms. We liked the writing style, and the clever way in which the accounts of the different mothers were teased out. It was interesting for the reader to match up the real-life mothers with the rainbow-book mothers of different colours and characteristics. We follow Eva as she makes a life long friend in Bridget Blume and her lovely family – particularly Bridget’s mother who feels like a really lifeline to Eva. Their relationship grows and changes and there are some really heartbreaking moments throughout this novel. Although Eva’s life could be construed as lonely, she has a best friend, Bridget, who fills the empty gaps perfectly. Bridget’s home is everything Eva dreams of; siblings, noise, mess, chaos - and the most warm and loving mother that ever lived. This is where Eva starts her journey to find out who she is, where she comes from and to try and understand the many variations of motherhood. This book was recommended to me by a very good friend of mine and I have to admit I had my prejudices. A novel about various types of mothers? A coming-of-age story about an ordinary Spanish woman? Normally, not my cup of tea. However, this book is painfully beautiful and incomprehensibly undervalued. Let me tell you why⬇️ Honest, heartfelt and hopeful, All My Mothers captures the joy and pain of love in all its forms, and reminds us that mothers can be found in the most unlikely of places and people. It broke my heart three times, but I adored it!” - MARIANNE CRONIN, author of One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot

A truly glorious life-affirming book, in which love, hope and friendship trump sorrow’ DINAH JEFFERIES Je suis quelqu’un qui aime les personnages. S’il y a pas une intrigue de ouf mais des bons personnages développés, I’m all in (ici il y a les deux). J’ai rarement lu des personnages si bien écrit. J’ai presque cru que c’était autobiographique tellement ils m’ont semblés *réels*On the day that Eva Martínez-Green started school at St Hilda’s in London, two important things happened: first she met Bridget Blume; and secondly she was introduced to a book called ‘The Rainbow Rained Us’. Bridget becomes Eva’s friend, and the book has such a profound impact on Eva, that she asks her father to buy her a copy. Ms Feast, the class teacher, reads the book to the school. And from the story Eva realises that there are many different types of mothers. But somehow, Eva and her mother do not match. There are gaps in Eva’s life and questioning her parents does not help fill in these gaps. Eva wonders where she belongs. It is intense in parts, lighter in others and even serendipitous in some. It is, on the whole, a well-written work about women of varying personalities who harmoniously (or not) form a complete picture. The vivid imagery in All My Mothers adds another layer of depth to the storyline, making it a truly captivating read.

I didn't start this expecting to find a character that means as much to me as Eva. But once in a while you find a character that hits you at your core, and that's what Eva did for me. Her complicated family life, her emotional turmoil, her fierce friendship, her curiosity mixed with hesitance. This is one of those characters that touched my heart, and I'll carry her story with me. Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan is one of those books that follows you around long after you have read it. It is short and uncomplicated. You may find yourself putting the book down after finishing it, and wondering what to do next. The atmosphere and characters keep popping up in my head with such vivid clarity that it is quite unnerving. A beautiful book. The unique style of writing in All My Mothers creates a compelling story that explores difficult topics with sensitivity and nuance. This is a title that I may not have been drawn to immediately as it sounded a little syrupy. I was wrong. It’s filled with insight into friendship, ,love , longing loss and the bonds between women. For the lyrical quality of the writing alone, this is a wonderful book and despite moments of heartache, I’m so pleased to have read it. Powerful and compelling from start to finish. As Eva enters adulthood, her struggles with endometriosis and infertility whilst in an unfulfilling and controlling relationship were insightful and honest. I’ve yet to come across novels where these issues feature throughout the plot and they resonated with me personally.
